What is your skill set?

Besides running a store, I mostly sit with my sewing machine and sew handbags. Before that I cut the leather and I prepare it for sewing, and when it’s done I finish it by hand. This involves a variety of tools, glue, a hammer, studs and sometimes even bandages.

Which product/job/service are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of my women’s handbags with buckles. I had those buckles made based off of my own idea and I just love sewing those bags and adding the metal detailing when I’m done.

Why do you do what you do?

While I’m creating a new bag, I get so caught up in it and lose track of time, I don’t even feel the need to sleep. I just get overwhelmed with a passion that makes me finish it and that is why I continue to do what I do.

What are you scared of?

I’m afraid of large impositions and taxes, as well as the unpredictable economic politics that have an aversion towards smaller entrepreneurs. I’m scared of it draining the enthusiasm and creativity, because the everyday struggle with bureaucracy pulls you away from that initial spark that every small entrepreneur has.

How did you overcome your fears?

I start each year with new ideas and renewed energy. It’s not easy putting a price tag on your work in our market, especially since this includes giving to the state. But after some calculations about purchasing materials and investing only in unavoidable tools and supplies, as well as not investing in marketing, we’re able to keep our heads above water.

What would you say to others with a talent they’re afraid to try?

To others that think they have a talent, but are afraid to try it, I would recommend just working on it. It may not be easy in the beginning to get your product or service out there, but the market is big and you just need to find a good way to reach your target audience. You can do this through social media, making a website or a blog, working with others, opening your own store or taking part in various fairs.
